Professional Experience
Since completing pupillage in September 2010, Rory has gained considerable experience in all aspects of criminal defence work, from first appearance to trial and, where necessary, to sentencing and/or appeal. Rory is particularly familiar with proceedings in the magistrates' courts and in the Youth Court but also has experience as a Crown Court advocate.
Rory completed pupillage at Field Court Chambers, a set well known for its family work. During that time he spent a total of six months assigned to specialist family law practitioners. As a result, Rory has had exposure to care proceedings, contact disputes, international abduction matters, ancillary relief proceedings and other work. He is therefore well placed to advise and assist in all areas of family law.
Rory's own family work to date has included applications for injunctions such as non-molestation orders and occupation orders and applications for orders such as contact orders, residence orders and special guardianship orders. Rory has represented both parents and local authorities and he is particularly interested in cases involving the welfare of children.
Rory also accepts instructions in civil cases and is particularly interested in employment law and personal injury. Where appropriate, he is willing to consider acting on a conditional fee basis. Examples of Rory's civil work to date include: being part of a team of counsel acting for the claimants in a complex and ongoing claim in the Chancery Division for fraud, breach of trust, knowing assistance and knowing receipt (see reported case below); successfully applying to set aside a judgment in favour of a major high street bank which had been entered against his client when he was unrepresented; regularly (and successfully) applying for and resisting enforcement orders such as third party debt orders and charging orders, and attending hearings in the Bankruptcy Registry.
During his second six, Rory spent three months assigned to a public law specialist. As such he has a secure grounding in public law principles and practice and is very happy to accept instructions in that area.
