Professional Experience

Ross has experience in the following areas:

Crime

Ross prosecutes and defends in both the magistrates' and crown courts. Prosecution work is primarily for the CPS or Probation Service but he also has experience prosecuting for Revenue and Customs and the Department for Work and Pensions. Recent crown court prosecution work ranges from simple thefts and ABHs through to more complex blackmails and a spate of commercial burglaries using inside knowledge. The total amount stolen is roughly £275,000.

Defence work is equally varied. Recently completed and current work includes GBH with intent, possession with intent to supply class A drugs, threats to kill, robbery, arson, burglary, ABH, conspiracy to defraud and a benefit fraud which spanned eight years and totalled almost £100,000. Ross also has experience of dealing with proceeds of crime hearings and has conducted confiscation hearings arising out of both fraud and drugs offences (both lifestyle and non-lifestyle).

Ross has built up a practice in defending protesters. These cases often involve legal arguments surrounding police powers, human rights and disclosure. Ross therefore has a detailed knowledge of PACE, the CPIA and the HRA.

Other recent cases have involved defendants with severe mental illness or youths (including cases where certificates for assigned counsel were granted due to their complexity).

Prison Law

Ross has experience of this growing area of law and has conducted adjudications and parole hearings (including for prisoners subject to IPPs and EPPs).

Civil Law

Ross is instructed in a wide range of civil matters. He has substantial experience in negligence matters, primarily resulting from road traffic accidents. He is available to advise on liability and/or quantum as well as drafting statements of case and representing at trial if necessary. He has conducted cases on all tracks. Ross appreciates that solicitors often have to work to strict deadlines and the sanctions under the CPR can be severe; he therefore seeks a quick turnaround on every piece of work while maintaining a high standard.

Ross also has significant experience in dealing with possession actions (by mortgagees, landlords and against trespassers) and consumer credit matters. He has a detailed knowledge of the various Housing Acts and the Consumer Credit Act.
